Acupuncture and Endometriosis

This week I treated a woman with severe pelvic pain. She had recently been diagnosed with Endometriosis after years of suffering with various debilitating symptoms not really knowing what was causing them. She came to me as a last resort after being on strong painkillers and hormonal drugs for a long period of time without much improvement.
She felt depressed and unable to cope with everyday life, what could she do to make life easier? She had picked up a leaflet about Endometriosis at the doctors surgery. It mentioned painkillers, hormonal drugs and surgery to remove adhesions.
I wish Acupuncture could be mentioned as a treatment option!
I wish women with menstrual problems and pains would be recommended by their GP to see an Acupuncturist!
I have seen many women suffering with gynaecological conditions benefiting tremendously by having acupuncture. Pelvic pain reduction, regulation of the menstrual cycle, mood swings more balanced, improved sleep, less anxiety and so on. Acupuncture is non invasive and have no side effects, compared to medication and surgery. It is an holistic therapy working both on a physical and an emotional level.
I am not saying that Acupuncture is a miracle cure for Endometriosis , sometimes surgery is necessary and medication can be beneficial , but today it seems doctors are prescribing hormonal drugs and strong painkillers as a first port of call with no real consideration of the long term effects. At least that is the impression I have , it would be great to be proven wrong.
If there was more information available to Western Medical Practitioners about the benefits of using Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture to treat gynaecological conditions it would create better awareness and women could have the best of two worlds. East and West working together to achieve health and well being. Don't make Acupuncture your last resort!
